On the 10th day, three effigies –one of Ravana, Meghnath, and Kumbhkaran are erected with the help of paper and bamboo sticks. Inside the effigies, there are firecrackers. When Lord Rama sets the effigies on fire, these crackers explode with great noise. Children feel greatly delighted to see this scene. When the effigies are burnt people cry ‘Jai Shree Ram’. With the burning of the effigies, this festival comes to an end and people go to their homes.
Another story has it that Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura on this day. Mahishasura – a demon with the head of a buffalo and body of human – had created devastation on the earth after defeating the demon and discharged the rule of Adharma. To win back Dharma, Goddess Shakti (power) appeared as Durga. She fought Mahisha and numerous demons for nine days and on the tenth day she killed Mahisha. From then onwards the day is celebrated as Vijayadashami.
