It is acknowledged in the month of September in the memory of Lord Rama’s conquer over Ravan, the demon king of Lanka. Because there are many myths related to this festival according to the customs and traditions of the people in many regions of the country. This festival was started celebrating by the people of Hindu religion from the day Lord Rama had killed the demon king Ravana on the day of Dussehra (means the 10th day of Ashwayuja month of Hindu calendar). Lord Rama had killed Ravana because he had kidnapped the Mata Seeta and was not agree to return her to Lord Rama. Lord Rama had won the war with Ravana by the help of younger brother Lakshman and Vanar soldier of Hanuman.

In other parts of the country, especially in northern India, this festival continues for 10 days. In every town, city, village Ramlila’s is held at the stages organized by Ramlila Committee. In some areas, an exhibition is also held during this period. This Ramlila is held in the form of a drama depicting the various aspects of Ram’s life. A special ground is meant for it.

These grounds are big enough to accommodate the public of that area and other surroundings. The stage is beautifully decorated. The dramatic actions of Ramlila generally take place in the evening and continue till 9 to 10 pm. A large crowd in colorful dresses come to the ground to see this scene.

On the 10th day, three effigies –one of Ravana, Meghnath, and Kumbhkaran are erected with the help of paper and bamboo sticks. Inside the effigies, there are firecrackers. When Lord Rama sets the effigies on fire, these crackers explode with great noise. Children feel greatly delighted to see this scene. When the effigies are burnt people cry ‘Jai Shree Ram’. With the burning of the effigies, this festival comes to an end and people go to their homes.

Another story has it that Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura on this day. Mahishasura – a demon with the head of a buffalo and body of human – had created devastation on the earth after defeating the demon and discharged the rule of Adharma. To win back Dharma, Goddess Shakti (power) appeared as Durga. She fought Mahisha and numerous demons for nine days and on the tenth day she killed Mahisha. From then onwards the day is celebrated as Vijayadashami.
